Challenge

Desire to simulate an entire city, but previous synthetic environments restricted to a few thousand entities
Number of users connected into simulations restricted to 50-100
Need to include activity and lifestyle routines of entities and integrate Unreal Engine’s behaviour trees feature

Solution

Segregated the city by running multiple Unreal Engine 4 servers, joined seamlessly to form the entire location.
Integrated the servers as a cluster, using the full terrain, behaviour and physics features of the game engine
Leveraged Hadean’s dynamic scaling capabilities to meet the computational requirements of the project

Outcome

Supported 2.2 million continuously active, AI controlled entities in a dense urban environment composed primarily of humans and ground vehicles and a smaller number of aerial vehicles
Supported a minimum of 300 independent, simultaneously connected and interactive actors
